How Smoking and Alcohol Can Affect Your Skin

Saturday, May 10th, 2008

The reason that you may want to consider quitting your smoking habit isn’t just limited to avoiding lung cancer anymore. One of the major threats to your skin next to sun and chemicals is actually smoking. It not only accelerates the aging process, but it also causes the narrowing of blood vessels throughout your body which stops the supply of oxygen and nutrients to your skin. After only 10 years of smoking you may start to show signs of skin aging such as wrinkles and dry skin. This means that if you start smoking as a teenager, you can show aging signs in your 20’s.

If your skin is slowly being starved of the oxygen that it so desperately needs, it can have a real affect on your skin. Along with smoking, alcohol also destroys Vitamin A that your skin needs. Vitamin A is an immune boosting substance that can keep your skin looking young and healthy. Also, it is your first line of defense against bacteria and infections that can lead to acne and blemishes. Lastly, Vitamin A helps to generate new cells that replace the dead ones that your skin naturally loses which keeps your skin looking firm and youthful.

Over a long period of smoking and drinking, the elastic fibers and collagen in your body gets damaged which means your skin takes on a droopy appearance. It will no longer be firm and flexible as it would be if you were not doing such damage to it. You may get premature wrinkles around the lips, and in the forehead and eyes.

Smoking and drinking are not only harmful to the inner body, but the outer body as well, and if you are a smoker or are more than the occasional drinker, it is important to know what effects you are having on your skin. Skin protection is more than just putting on sun block every time you leave the house. It is also about protecting it from the inside out. By eliminating bad habits from your life, you are sure to have skin that glows and looks youthful for many years to come.

Skin Care Routines You Should Follow

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

Your skin is one of the most valuable things you have. In order to keep your skin looking young and healthy there is a certain routine you should follow. Some things are fairly basic, such as washing your face at least twice daily. You should also wash your body at least once daily, either through a sponge bath or shower. Where it may get confusing is figuring out which types of soaps or body washes to use.

Using regular body soap is fine, but it can include some harsh detergents which can strip the oil from your skin. However, not all soaps are like that, so you really have to pick and choose which one is best for your skin type. To figure out what skin type you are you can simply look in the mirror during daylight hours. If you have shiny skin then chances are you have an oily complexion, especially if it is shiny in the T-zone which is the forehead, nose, and chin areas. This is where your oil glands are the most prevalent, and where you get the most acne breakouts. If you have dry skin, you may notice a dehydrated appearance to your skin. It could feel tight and it may look dull or flaky. If you have normal skin then you have a more uniform texture and you will notice that you only break out occasionally. Still yet, some people have combination skin which means that it has both oily and dry patches.

When it comes to picking the right soaps, here are some suggestions:

For oily skin – choose soaps that contain salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide

For dry skin – choose gentle soaps which contain moisturizers such as pure glycerin soap

For sensitive skin – choose hypoallergenic soaps and avoid soaps that are perfumed or have antibacterial qualities

For normal skin – choose plant based soaps that are made for the face to avoid clogged pores

By deciphering your skin type and using the right types of soaps or washes, your skin should clear up and look healthy. Continue to wash your face at least twice a day and apply moisturizer when you are done for the best skin you can have.

Eliminating Dark Spots on Your Skin

Friday, April 11th, 2008

Everyone wants a smooth, clear complexion, but over time certain factors can lead to dark spots on your skin. Even if you clean your face regularly you may still develop what is known as hyper-pigmentation, or dark spots. Dark spots are pockets of discolored skin that remain after pimples or legions have disappeared. Dark spots happen for a variety of reasons such as hepatic problems, diseases, taking too much iron, or hormonal changes. Even the lack of certain vitamins and minerals such as calcium and Vitamins A, B, and E can cause dark spots. Most likely though, your dark spots are caused by an increase of melanin that occurs after your skin becomes inflamed or irritated. This also happens when you are out in the sun too much, especially if you have a darker skin tone.

The first thing you need to do if you have dark spots on your skin is to check with a dermatologist to make sure that the spot is harmless. If you find that it is harmless you can try some home remedies that may effectively get rid of them, or at least diminish them. There are certain over the counter creams and sun block that are specially formulated to diminish dark spots. Either way, you should start using sun block immediately with at least a SPF of 15 or higher.

There are skin lighteners that contain mild hydroquinone which is essentially skin bleach. There are many types of skins that cannot tolerate this ingredient, but if you can, this is a great way to lighten the dark spots. Although it may take up to a year to fade the most darkened of areas, for most people it can be very effective. If over the counter remedies don’t work then it may be time to consider skin peelings that can be done at a dermatologists office that will take away the top layer of your skin around the dark spot so that over the course of a few acne treatments it will no longer be visible. To avoid getting any future dark spots, it is important that you stop picking or popping your pimples that you currently have. It can result in scarring which can lead to dark spots.

Healthy Diet Equals Healthy Skin

Tuesday, March 4th, 2008

Just as all your organs need the proper care and nutrition, your skin needs nourishment too. Your skin is actually the body’s largest organ and  as you know, it covers you from head to toe. As an essential organ, you need to take care of it for your entire life, so you can continue to have radiant and healthy skin long term.

Although there are a lot of acne products on the market that say that they can help you look younger and more vibrant, often the most overlooked acne treatment for the skin is simply your diet. What you eat isn’t just reflected on your body, but on your skin as well. If you eat food that is fatty and processed then you are more likely to have oily skin that is ripe for acne. However, if you learn how to add healthier food to your diet such as whole grains, fruits and vegetables, your skin will look better than ever.

Food that is rich in antioxidants gives you great and radiant skin. Through years of research it has been found that antioxidants actually slow down the aging process because it is slowing down cell degeneration. This helps you to avoid wrinkles, dark spots, and other blemishes that mar your complexion. By increasing your intake of fruits and leafy vegetables to the recommended amount of 5 to 9 servings per day you are increasing your antioxidant intake.

As well as upping your vegetable and fruit intake, you also need to add a lot more water to your diet. Although it has long been said that 8 glasses of water per day is enough, it is recommended that you drink half your body weight in water ounces. For example, if you weigh 150 pounds, you should be drinking at least 75 ounces of water per day. This is integral for healthy looking skin because it keeps it hydrated and looking young.

Both protein and good carbohydrates also add to your skins healthy appearance by giving your body the vitamins and nutrients that it needs to keep you looking younger. If this all sounds like a way to eat healthier, it is, but there are absolute benefits from doing so. Your skin will never look as wonderful as it does if you follow a healthy diet.

Skincare - It’s Not Just for Women Any More!

Saturday, July 28th, 2007

Not that long ago, if a man wanted to use a skincare product, he would send his wife or girlfriend off to the store to make the purchase. Indeed, there were even some fellows who actually hid the fact that they were using specialized skincare products from their very own significant others. However, in recent years, there has been a marked increase in the number of men who have taken to using special skincare products – and who are doing so out in the open. In short, skincare and skincare treatments are not just for women any longer.

One of the more significant problems that men face when it comes to skincare centers on dryness and irritation that results from shaving. Therefore, when it comes to skincare products for men, many guys find themselves looking for effective moisturizers. In this regard, there are products that have been developed and designed specifically for use by men. However, the reality is that any well manufactured moisturizer, even one that initially had been marketed towards women, can be effective in assisting a man to deal with dryness and irritation issues that arise from shaving.

Exfoliation is also a consideration for many men today. Of course, shaving itself can serve as a useful means of exfoliating dead skin from much of the facial area. However, because men do not shave their foreheads and other parts of their bodies, it can be helpful and beneficial for a man to purchase a product that is designed specifically for skin exfoliation. By removing dead skin cells with regularity, a man’s skin will look healthier and even younger.

A major trend in the past few years when it comes to men and skincare involves a growing number of men who have found themselves ever more concerned about wrinkles and age spots. Of course, battling wrinkles – crows feet, frown lines and the likes – historically was thought to be of concern exclusively to women. However, there have been some anti-wrinkle and anti-aging products that have been introduced onto the marketplace more recently that are designed specifically for men. As stated previously, even though there may be products specifically targeted to men, when it comes to skincare – including when it comes to anti-aging regimens – products that initially were designed for women usually are found to be equally effective with males.

In the final analysis, we live in an age when it is important for a man to feel like he looks his best. The better he feels about the way he looks, the better he feels overall. The foundation upon which any man’s looks are built is healthy looking skin. In the 21st century, there is an every growing array of skincare products designed to assist men in furthering their own skin health and maintenance.

Keeping Your Skin Healthy and Young Looking

Friday, June 1st, 2007

In this day and age, women and men alike are becoming more concerned about the appearance and health of their skin. Particularly, many people find themselves in the market looking for the most effective anti-aging skincare products that are available. If you are in the market for anti-aging skincare products, you actually may even feel a bit over your head. There are so many different products now on the market that it can all seem a bit confusion. There simply is such a number of anti-aging skincare products, all of which are making different claims, you very well may end up not knowing which product to purchase. You may end up having no idea which anti-aging skincare product will serve you best not only today but into the future as well.

When you are in the market for any anti-aging skincare products, you are well served avoiding companies that make outlandish claims about their products. There are no miracle cures when it comes to anti-aging skincare. Despite the legend, there really is no such thing as a Fountain of Youth. In short, if the claims that are being made about a particular anti-aging skincare product are too good to be true … chances are more than good that the claims simply are not true.

In the end, you are best served in your own search for reliable anti-aging skincare products and related treatments to pay close attention to the ingredients that are included within a specific product. In the end, it is the ingredients that make the difference when it comes to anti-aging skincare products and treatments that will be of greatest assistance and that will be most beneficial to you.

Some ingredients that are commonly found to be effective in reducing the appearance of fine lines, crows feet, laugh lines and the like are active retinol, antioxidants and coenzyme Q10. By examining what the ingredients are in a particular anti-aging skincare product, you will be able to ascertain which, if any, of these elements can be found in a particular product. Again, it is precisely these ingredients that have proven to be most effective in battling the appearance of fine lines, crows feet, laugh lines and some other types of minor wrinkling that occurs on the skin over time. In the final analysis, the most significant steps that you can take to avoid premature aging of the skin is to develop and engage in an appropriate and consistent skin care regimen. That regimen needs to include proper cleansing, exfoliation, moisturizing and protecting the skin from harmful sun rays and other environmental irritants. Through this type of regimen, you will have youthful and healthy looking skin longer into your life.
